Basil’s so pervasive that it’s easy to forget its ancient roots. It goes back thousands of years and spans multiple civilizations.
Basil’s Heritage
Basil may be native to India, Southeast Asia, or Africa. Some sources suggest that basil was domesticated over 4,000–5,000 years ago for culinary and medicinal purposes.
In Ancient Egypt, basil was found in tombs and may have been used in embalming rituals.
In early America, enslaved Africans used it medicinally as a health tonic.
True to its multicultural roots, it’s delicious in a variety of international cuisines. So, this season at Jolly’s Mill Pond, we’re growing Sweet Basil, Thai Basil, and Purple Basil!
